A SEA WITH NO SEASHORE- THE MYSTERY OF NATURE- THE SARGASSO SEA

When we think about seas we think that large area covered with water and surrounded by shore but there is a sea in the world that has no seashore and is surrounded by ocean currents. The name of this sea is Sargasso sea.

LOCATION OF SARGASSO SEA:

The Sargasso  sea is present in the middle of North Atlantic Ocean. It is between America ,Europe, and Africa .

It is not bordered by land it is enclosed by powerful ocean currents:

·        The Gulf Stream

·        The North Atlantic Current (north)

·        The Canary Current (east)

·        The North Atlantic Equatorial current(south)

These currents make a circular system and trap water inside it and create a sea which is shoreless.

REASON FOR NO SHORE:

The main reason for no shore is that this sea is defined by currents ,not land boundaries. These currents are invisible walls, and hold water in place. So,

·        There are no boundaries ,beaches or coastlines

·        The sea is stable and calm

·        It appears like an ocean floating in an ocean.

FLOATING SEAWEEDS:

This sea is famous for its brown floating seaweeds called Sargassum. Much area of sea is covered by these seaweeds and that’s why this  sea is named Sargasso sea.

ROLE OF FLOATING PLANTS:

The main role of these floating plants is:

·        They provide shelter for marine life in sea

·        They acts as mini ecosystem for baby turtles fishes and crabs

 WATER OF THIS SEA:

The Sargasso Sea has clear water. This is because:

·        There is little wind disturbance

·        Only few nutrients enter the sea

·        There is less pollution in this sea as compared to coastal seas

SAILORS’ DESCRIPTION OF THIS SEA :

Sailors are the people who can describe sea in a good manner. Sailors describe this sea as the most calm and motionless part of ocean.

UNIQUE MARINE ECOSYSTEM OF THIS SEA:

This sea is remote but still it has unique ecosystem with unique organisms

·        Eels that migrate thousands of kilometers to breed

·        Rare fish species

·        Sea turtles  and birds

European and American eels reproduce in this sea and this sea is vital for their survival.

MYSTERIES RELATED TO THIS SEA:

For centuries sailors have told strange stories regarding Sargasso Sea. Early explorers which include Christopher  Colombus , reported seeing flat mats of seaweeds  which are known as Sargassum. These patches make the sea appear still and lifeless which creates fear among the sailors that their boats can stuck in this sea forever.

Many sailors told that ships entering Sargasso sea face many challenges like no presence of wind, slow movement, and  silence. Some historical events tell that many ships were found in this Sea with no crew.

SCIENTIFIC EXPLANATION TO THESE MYTHS:

Modern science tells logical explanation to these mysteries. The Sargasso Sea is located within north Atlantic gyre, where currents of water trap Sargassum and make water motionless. In past, ships sailing depended on the presence of winds. That’s why in the areas with no winds can be life threatening .

Moreover the  floating sargassum also created illusion to sailors that’ships were not moving

CONNECTION TO BERMUDA TRIANGLE:
