Nowadays typing is a great skill it is used everywhere in business, education, and communication. While most people type at a medium speed but some outstanding people have made records in world for their fastest typing speeds. The record of fastest typing speed has astonished people for decades.

What is typing speed?

Typing speed is measured in words per minute also written as WPM. One word means five characters which includes spaces and punctuation. This measurement helps us to check how fast a person types and how much accurate that person types. An average typing speed is 40_45 words per minute but professional people may reach 70 _80 words per minute.

But the people who have made records in world are incredibly so intelligent that they have pushed the limits of an average person's typing speed.

STELLA PAJUNAS:

Stella Pajunas in 1946 was recorded to have the fastest typing speed. She had the ability to write 216 words per minute. She completed this remarkable feat by using IBM electric typewriter.

Barbara Blackburn:

Another legend in typing world is Barbara Blackburn. She was listed by guiness world records as the fastest typist of English language. Blackburn achieved speed of 170 words per minute and some reports show that she also reached 212 words per minute using a Dvorak keyboard layout.

What made Blackburn famous and unique was her use of Dvorak simplified keyboard which was a layout designed to increase the efficiency of the typists and to help them to reduce the movement of their fingers while typing. Her achievements proved to the world that both skill and design of keyboard can affect the typing performance.

Modern typing records and online competitions of typing:

As use of information technology, computers and mobile phones have increased these days so the typing competitions have moved online.Now,platforms (Monkeytype and  TypeRacer)allow people to take part in typing competitions held globally and they can count their speeds in real time.

In recent years, a young man Mythical Rocket achieved an outstanding 293 words per minute in 15 seconds test and he also reached speeds above 300 hundred words per minute in bursts.

But, these modern records are called unofficial records because they are not observed under strict conditions.

Stenography- different level of typing speed they have:

One thing is important to note that typing speed depends on which machine is used for typing. for example stenographers who use several machines which allow to press multiple keys at a time and that's why they can achieve higher speeds. A professional stenographer Mark kislingbury had speeds of 375 words per minute. He used a stenotype machine.

As this method is very different from traditional typing so these kind of records are usually classified separately.

Modern typing records:

Typing is not just now limited to keyboards of computers and laptops.Smartphones have made the world aware with another typing idea that is by keyboards in smartphones.Nowadays we can see youngsters typing so fast on their smart phones.

For example, Aryan Pathak on May 26, 2024 made a record of typing the alphabets in just 2.88 seconds and on the same day he made a record of typing the alphabets backward in just 3.09 seconds.

 

In short we can say that a person can do anything if he wants so we should keep on trying and typing is a wonderful skill which we can build.
