Surviving the Freezing Edge of Death

According to biological research, when a person faces extreme cold the mechanism of Hypothermia quickly starts and the working of body consequently slows down so that heat energy can be conserved. So due to the slow body working extreme cold can kill a person in minutes.

Anna bagenholm was skiing in Norway and suddenly she fell through ice into freezing water. She was trapped under the freezing water for about 80 minutes. She could not breath under the water and when rescue reached to take her out,her temperature was dropped to 13.7C° which is the lowest temperature of human body ever recorded. Here we should keep in mind that enzymes of human body can work best at 37°C and naturally the temperature of human body is maintained within specified limits of range.

But Anna made an amzing record when she survived in such conditions.

Medically, she should have died.

Her heart had stopped. She didn’t show any signs of life. Still, doctors made efforts to revive her.It was a miracle that after a few hours of treatment by doctors she began to show some signs of life . Her heart started beating again. After sometime she made a near-complete recovery.

This changed thought of people about hyperthermia . This proved that in extreme cold body enters a protective condition, slowing down metabolism, and preserving the heat in body to maintain temperature.

Lost at Sea for Over a Year:

Can you  imagine being alone in the middle of an ocean without fresh food , any fresh water, and not even a single way to call anyone for help. For most people it would be very difficult to survive in such extreme conditions.

But José Salvador Alvarenga survived for stunning 438 days roaming across the Pacific ocean.

His small fishing boat was brushed aside by a storm in the ocean.Beacuse he had no navigation tools and no rescue to help so he has no other way except to adapt to this situation or die. He managed to survive by catching fishes with his naked hands and eating rawbirds and he used to collect rain water.

The psychological trauma was more greater than physical trauma.

The lonliness , fear, and an uncertain condition all these factors brought him to the edge of sanity. Still he was determined to remain alive.

After sometime he was found on a remote island. People didn’t believe his story. But later on his journey was confirmed by investigattions. And it became one of the longest survival cases at sea in human history.

Trapped in the Deadly Sahara Desert

Deserts are one of the most terrifying and horrible places on Earth. Extreme heat and no water make it impossible for anyone to survive.

Mauro Prosperi faced this during a marathon in the Sahara Desert. He faced a sandstorm and lost his way. He was separated from the other runners in the race.

For some days he wandered here and there alone. But after sometime he made a strong decision to survive and he treated his dehydration by drinking bat blood and even his own urine.

During his stay in desert once he believed that he would not survive more. Then he attempted to take his own life. But he was failed to do this because of dehydration. Then at this moment he changed his mind and he decided to fight against death and do anything to survive.

The chances of survival were essentially zero.

However she was found alive and was trapped in a part of aircraft wreckage. Although she was severely injured but she survived and then after sometime recovered.

Her case is considered one of the most extraordinary survival stories ever recorded. Experts believe that a combination of following factors play an important role in saving her life:

● The angle of impact

●The structure of the wreckage

Juliane koepcke, experienced to live in this rainforest as a teenager after a plane crash. She fell into the jungle but still she was starpped to her seat.

She was injured and alone. In these circumstances she had no choice except to live on her own knowledge of environment. She followed a stream as she knew that it could lead to civilization.

She remained in the jungle for almost 11 days. She faced hunger, thirst, and also danger. After sometime she found help and was rescued.

Her story is not about survival but also about the intelligence and courage and she also had the ability to stay calm.

 The Science Behind Survival

How do people survive such extreme conditions?

The answer lies in both biology and psychology.

The concept of psychology explains how human body react to extreme conditions. The body activates fight or filght response to cope with such conditions. During this response adrenaline is released and focus of human body is increased.

In extreme environments, the body can also adapt in surprising ways. For example:

• Slowing metabolism in cold conditions

• Conserving water in dehydration

• Increasing pain tolerance

But mostly research says that survival is not just about physical body’s strength but mental health also plays crucial role. The people who remain calm , think clearly and are hopeful are far more likely to survive.

 Common Traits of Survivors

As we know all the survivors had different circumstances but still most of survivors had similar Traits.

Strong Mental Resilience:

They are people of strong mental resilience and they refuse to give up even in impossible circumstances.

Adaptability:

They adapt to the situation and use all the available resoureces no matter how much unsual they are.

Problem-Solving Skills:

They have problem solving skills and they find the solution to problems quickly and they think creatively.

Hope and Determination:

They had hope and determination so they survived.

In short we can say that,

The people who survived such conditions give us motivation that if a person is determined to do anything then he can do. And these stories also tells us that anything is not impossible it is just our mindset due to which we hesitate to make decisions.
